Will Staycations Remain Popular In 2022?

Estate - 03.02.22

As you might’ve noticed, ‘staycations’ have boomed in popularity in the past few years (we can’t think why!). In our previous blog on eco-friendly staycations, we spoke about all the reasons as to why they’re the perfect solution to the various restrictions and lockdowns stopping us from travelling elsewhere. From reducing your own personal carbon footprint, to shopping local and falling in love with nature, there are endless reasons why staycations are a great idea.

Naturally, holidaymakers will be getting itchy feet. Who wouldn’t fancy a change of scenery after all this time? But we think the British countryside is so uniquely wonderful, there’s little chance anyone will turn their back on it completely!

This begs the question: will staycations remain popular in 2022? With all restrictions having been lifted in the UK on 26th January, and compulsory self-isolation for people with Covid looking as though it’s going to be stopping on 24th March, we’re set to all have more freedom than we’ve been used to since early 2020.

Here are some reasons why staycations may remain in 2022, and some reasons why they might not.

Will Staycations Remain Popular in 2022?

Reasons Why They Might Not…

  • The lure of the new – the restrictions imposed during the last two years have meant that everyone was pretty much confined to their own country for the time being. It’s little wonder that there was a boom in demand for domestic holidays! But with the possibility of travelling somewhere temperatures might reach a little higher, it’s not unlikely the chance will be grabbed by UK holidaymakers.
  • Affordable flights – It’s safe to say that the travel industry has suffered during the pandemic, and as a way of luring holidaymakers back to using their services, many travel companies have drastically reduced their flight prices. Flights to other European countries in particular are at an extreme low – meaning some may be tempted out of the country this way. But why not consider doing both? You’ve lost out on time, so 2022 is surely the year where you treat yourself to a holiday abroad, but indeed in our lovely country too.

…And Reasons Why Staycations Will Remain Popular

  • It’s trendy to staycation! – According to Statista, the number of domestic overnight trips in the UK between 2010-2019 increased positively, from 54.74 million in 2010 to 60.45 million in 2019. These pre-pandemic numbers suggest that staying in the UK has become more and more attractive to those who might otherwise have gone abroad. If the trend follows into 2022, it’s likely that ‘staycations’ will continue to be popular… And we can hardly blame people for falling in love with what’s on their doorstep! The holiday website SnapTrip reports that social media site TikTok’s ‘staycation’ hashtag has more than 800 million views. As 60% of TikTok’s audience are aged 16-24, there’s big potential for a younger base to see the benefits of holidaying locally, which is great!
  • There’s lots to discover on our doorstep – With UK holiday bookings having increased by 460% between 2019 and 2021, it’s likely that some people, who might previously have only holidayed abroad, have spent some time in the scenic corners of the UK. Considering the many wonderful hidden gems that are spread throughout our fair isle, it’s safe to say that holidaymakers might have found their new favourite place to relax and unwind! Why go to all the effort of an airport and overseas travel, particularly considering the fact that most countries will not have yet relaxed their process for entering the country, when you can visit somewhere beautiful right on your doorstep?
  • Friendlier to the planet – Additionally, the current societal shift towards sustainability means that people are considering how their carbon footprint is affecting the nature of the planet. With this in mind, it’s likely that ‘staycations’ will continue their popularity, since much fewer carbon emissions are obviously released when travelling a short distance by car than by aeroplane! There’s no better way to travel sustainably than to stay as close to your home base as possible – and shop and eat locally while you’re there, too. Local ingredients have a much smaller carbon footprint due to the produce coming from within a nearby radius, so it’s an extra reason to stay nearby.
  • Detox-inducing – Mental health is also something to consider. Nowadays, a calming and relaxing retreat is what many people are looking for when they book a holiday – life is so full of the hustle and bustle! It may be that travellers ask themselves what they’re really looking for when going away. Do busy airports and aeroplanes, packed-out hotels and crowded beaches sound appealing after two years of avoiding these types of environments? From a mental health standpoint, it might be more beneficial to retreat to the beautiful countryside for a refreshing change of pace.
  • Bring your doggies! We think there’s nothing more relaxing than walking your dog along a beautiful vista on a summer’s day – one of the many things you can do at Combermere! Another perk of a staycation is the fact you don’t have to worry about leaving your furry friend at home.

At Combermere Abbey, we’re passionate about making your staycation as relaxing as possible. With secluded, beautiful surroundings, we’re the perfect place to bring your dog for a wander along the scenic Cheshire / Shropshire border, take a dip in our mere, and explore the wonderful nature that can be found in the British countryside.
