Romantic Stays at Combermere Abbey

Staycation – 01.12.24

For a romantic weekend in Cheshire, Combermere Abbey offers an unmatched blend of magic and history, creating an experience to remember forever.

Among our most distinguished guests, one stands out, the captivating Empress Elisabeth of Austria, famously known as Sisi. This imperial visitor not only graced the Abbey with her presence but also declared it “the most romantic place in all Europe.” Read on to uncover the Empress’s enchanting connection to Combermere Abbey.

A Royal Love Story

Born Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie of Bavaria on Christmas Eve 1837, Sisi’s life changed forever when Emperor Franz Joseph fell for her at first sight, choosing her over her sister. At just 16, she became Empress of Austria. Sisi found her passion in horseback riding and hunting. She hunted across Europe, earning a reputation as a fearless and skilled rider. Sisi’s love of adventure brought her to Combermere Abbey, the perfect setting for her spirited pursuits.

An Imperial Arrival

In 1881, wanting to spend the season in England, Sisi agreed to rent Combermere Abbey from Viscount Combermere, her arrival was a royal spectacle. With 80 staff, including 25 grooms, and her own horses and cows, she transformed Wrenbury station into a lavish arrival point. The Abbey was buzzing with activity, with rooms converted into grand chambers, including her private gym, dressing room, and chapel.

The Empress’s stay at Combermere Abbey was national news. ‘The Empress of Austria In England – Combermere Abbey, Cheshire, Where Her Imperial Majesty Is Now Staying’.

A Life of Elegance

Sisi’s time at Combermere Abbey was marked by her distinctive lifestyle and beauty regimen. Known for her 20-inch waist and flawless complexion, she maintained her figure through rigorous exercise and a strict diet. Her beauty rituals included washing her hair with cognac and onions, sleeping in hot towels, and applying a mask of raw veal.

Sisi left a lasting impression on Combermere Abbey and its surroundings. Her visits were documented in newspapers, and her presence brought prestige to the Abbey. Her parting gift to Viscount Combermere—a gold snuff box adorned with diamonds—was a symbol of her appreciation.

Tragically, Sisi’s life ended in 1898 when she was assassinated in Geneva. Yet her memory endures, and her romantic connection to Combermere Abbey continues to captivate visitors.
