So, if you’re thinking about booking your break at Combermere Abbey, here’s a list of midweek staycation ideas in and around Cheshire and Shropshire from our guests, especially for you.

6 Retiree-Friendly Midweek Staycation Ideas

Visit the museum

One of the best ways to spend a day is in a museum, letting the world pass you by as you soak in the intriguing history of an area.

If you have a certain interest or would like to broaden your knowledge, Cheshire has a wealth of history ready for you to discover. With over 21 museums and galleries in the region, presenting everything from art and archaeology, chemistry and canals, and mills and mansions, there truly is a treasure of history that runs through the county!

If you’re a history aficionado, then you’ll love Combermere itself too. The abbey has a rich of history that dates right back to 1133. You can absorb this whilst staying in one of our restored North Wing B&B suites or one of our 10 self-catering cottages. During certain times of the year, you can even join one of our own guided house tours. If you are a group, these are available all year round.

Explore a walking/hiking trail

Staycations aren’t all about relaxing, and walking holidays are on the rise. In fact, one survey found them to be the most popular excursion amongst UK holidaymakers!

So, think about getting up and getting active whilst exploring the beautiful area surrounding you. Cheshire and Shropshire both have outstanding walking and hiking trails, with something to fit everyone’s capability.

If you’re looking for a simple stroll, our guests have recommend visiting Delamere Forest in Cheshire for a relaxing nature walk. Or if you would like a challenge, Carding Mill Valley in Shropshire has been mentioned as a popular destination too. It’s just over an hour away from us and there, you can explore waterfalls cascading over rocks and take in the natural beauty of the area. The Sandstone Trail is another unique experience that runs the entire length of the country, but ends in Whitchurch. It was even voted as one of Britain’s favourite walks in an ITV poll, so a ‘must do’ indeed!

We have our own woodland walk on the estate too if you’d like to give the car a break. You can discover our ancient trees, wildflowers, and lots of birdlife, all within a short walking distance from your cottage or B&B suite.

Take a trip to the theatre

Everyone loves a trip to the theatre, but Chester have taken that experience to the next level. Grosvenor Park has an annual open-air theatre that’s constructed over the summer months. This has been one of Chester’s most loved summer events for a few years now, so it’s truly not one to be missed.

Or, if you’re visiting in the autumn or winter months, then do pay Storyhouse a visit if you can. They put on an array of films and shows all year around, which have been noted as particularly popular amongst our retiree staycation guests. Combermere is only 45 minutes from Chester by car, so why not venture into the city for a night of fun then head back and relax in the quiet countryside bliss?

Create a county bucket list

We’re on the border of Cheshire and Shropshire, so why not make yourself a to do list that covers the counties to tick off before your trip? From idyllic parklands to walks by the River Dee, Cheshire has a lot to offer in the way of retiree-friendly things to do. You can read some of their summer activities here. Or… Why not venture down south to Whitchurch or Shrewsbury, which are both not too far from Combermere? The historic county of Shropshire is brimming with things to keep you busy, so plan your trip with days filled with adventure, and we promise you’ll leave us feeling refreshed and delighted.

Try out a new hobby

They say life starts when you retire! Have you ever been interested in taking up a new skill or hobby, but never found the time? Well, if ever there was a time to try something new, then now is it!

Why not try your hand at pottery, take part in a dance class or have a go at clay pigeon shooting? There are a wealth of activities available just a short distance from the estate.

Enjoy the simple pleasures

Considering all of the above is certainly exciting, but sometimes one books a break purely just to relax – and that’s fine too! In our self-catering holiday cottages, dogs are very welcome which means you can spend time ditching the car and kicking back with nature instead, exploring the estate and county roads before relaxing with a hearty meal at one of our local country pubs. The Combermere Arms is just a short walk away, and they have some marvellous recommended walks from the venue which is perfect for a slow afternoon with your pooch.
