Give the Dog a Bone – It’s National Dog Day!

Estate - 20.08.18

On the 26th August, it’s one of our favourite days of the year – it’s National Dog Day! Whether you have a pedigree purebreed or a one-of-a-kind mongrel mix, this day is set up to celebrate the joy that our hounds bring – and boy do we plan on celebrating.

When you come home after a long, hard day at the office, the dog’s always there to greet you with a wagging tail. When you really need to get out and about in the fresh air, you’ll bet you’ve got some four-legged motivation. When you just need some quiet time, somehow they just know to curl up and be there for you. But it’s not just the day to day joy which our dogs bring which the day aims to celebrate, but also to recognise the hard work undertaken by service dogs and the many homeless dogs which are in desperate need of adoption – a worthy cause, if ever there was one.

Here at Combermere, it’s no secret that we’re huge dog lovers – the estate owners themselves have two beautiful black Labradors. Lucky guests might catch a glimpse of Zanzie and Zola bounding around the estate, and Zola has even taken to water skiis on Combermere’s lake!

Because we’re dog lovers ourselves, all of our luxury self-catering cottages are dog-friendly – we even provide specially designed ‘pooch packs’ for all furry guests which includes a sofa cover, bowl and treat. We also have special areas of land where dogs can roam without leads. Why? We don’t think going on holiday means heaving to leave your hounds behind – whether it’s because kennel space and dog sitters are expensive or fully booked, or simply because you don’t like leaving your four legged friend!

To celebrate National Dog Day, and to help encourage our fellow canine parents to enjoy a holiday in the company of their fur baby, we will be waiving the usual daily charge for dogs staying in our award-winning, luxury self-catering cottages. That’s right, over the August Bank Holiday weekend – where National Dog Day lands on the Sunday – dogs can stay with you for free!

We caught up with Sarah Callander Beckett, owner of Combermere Abbey, who explains: “We adore seeing our guests’ dogs on holiday with them at the Combermere cottages, and have designed our accommodation and land to be as hospitable as possible to all creatures. A weekend break in the countryside with miles of woodlands, parklands and lakes to explore before retiring to a luxury cottage can be just as restorative for dogs as it is for people! National Dog Day is the perfect holiday to encourage owners to enjoy a long weekend away over the bank holiday, without having to worry about organising dog-sitters or kennels.”

And you certainly can relax – after spending the day tiring yourselves out as you explore the countryside in this glorious summer sun (with this heatwave, why on earth would anyone want to spend the time and money travelling abroad?!) – it’s time to choose how you’ll spend your evening. You could head on over to the Cholmondeley Arms, a dog friendly pub with excellent food and – wait for it – over 366 gins! You can read more about it in our previous blog. Or if you’d rather spend the evening in your comfy clothes, you can take advantage of your luxury kitchen and cook your favourite comfort food, pour yourselves a glass of wine and put your feet up with a film.

So, what are you waiting for? Pack your suitcase, and don’t forget the dog lead – the whole family can head to Combermere Abbey for a long weekend in the country! If you’re planning on joining us for the National Dog Day celebrations, make sure to check out our Dog Policy.
