When we think of honeymoons, we usually envisage couples starting their married life together in paradise, lounging on long sandy beaches catching the warm rays of the sun, or perhaps in the exclusive North Wing Honeymoon Suite here at Combermere Abbey.
Whatever you decide, we understand that there’s a lot to take in, especially on top of wedding planning, so we’ve put together some alternative honeymoon destinations that offer something a little different…
Set your sights on the Nordic island of Iceland, well known for the co-existence of fire and ice. At the top of your list for places to visit is the Blue Lagoon, one of the 25 wonders of the world. Immerse yourself in the famous geothermal waters and feel your wedding stress melt away, there’s nothing quite like it! During your visit, you can also enjoy the spa amenities from the sauna and steam rooms to the refreshing power of the Blue Lagoon’s man-made waterfall.
To immerse yourself in the full experience, you can stay in the Silica Hotel which has its own private bathing lagoon with views of the surrounding lava fields. Don’t forget to book yourself onto the Northern Lights Ocean Cruise , the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Northern Lights in person and the perfect experience to share and create memories with your partner.
With an array of hotels on offer it’ll be difficult to choose, however we love the Palace Hotel Tokyo as it is the perfect location for exploring the different districts. The Otemachi subway station is a stone’s throw away from hotel, leading you to anywhere you want to go in the city. The hotel is also home to a spa inspired by the journey, Evian natural mineral water takes through the Alps. Enjoy fine dining in their many restaurants that serve an array of different cuisines. The hotel rooms are beautifully designed and are some of the largest of any hotel in Tokyo.
If there’s ever a time to go all out (well it’s on your honeymoon!), so why not take a tour of Tokyo from the skies. Take a helicopter ride at sunset with your partner and capture the incredible sights of the city. Ueno Park is famous for its cherry blossom trees which are usually in bloom between March and April. One thousand cherry trees line the main pathway of the park. Enjoy the tradition of “hanami” (flowering viewing) and pack a picnic for a romantic afternoon taking in the beauty of the many cherry blossoms.
Are you newlyweds that love adventure and the great outdoors? If you are then The Canadian Rockies are calling to you! There are so many activities ranging from white water rafting, to cave tours in Banff and wildlife tours in Jasper. After a day of taking in the beautiful scenery, come back to your Rocky Mountain cabin at Cathedral Mountain Lodge located in the Yoho National Park and just a short drive from Lake Louise.
You can also enjoy a dining experience that’s out of this world with fine wines and a delicious menu that features seafood, charcuterie selections and fresh market vegetables. End your evening by a fire with a s’mores kit that can be purchased from the Lodge. The idea of this getaway has certainly got us daydreaming!
Looking for a sub-tropical sanctuary closer to home? The Isles of Scilly lie just off the coast of Cornwall but you won’t believe you’re still in England with the beautiful blue sea and white sand beaches. There are five inhabited islands to explore: St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s, Bryher and St Agnes. St Mary’s is the largest island and boasts unforgettable scenery with miles of coastal and country paths. Either start your honeymoon there before moving on by boat to other islands or stay at one of the many romantic hotels in the Scillies, St Mary’s Hall Hotel .
This quaint hotel was originally built around a townhouse and it exudes the relaxing atmosphere of St Mary’s. If you’re looking for something a little more secluded then you’ll love the one-bedroomed Sea Garden cottages that overlook Old Grimsby beach on Tresco. You’d also have access to a spa and gym facilities. During your stay, you simply couldn’t miss out on all the fun activities on the water, from swimming to diving and you could even get your own ‘catch of the day’!
Of course, the prospect of a honeymoon abroad is very exciting but we know you might be feeling pretty tired after your big day! So why not allow yourself some time to wind down and indulge in a pre-honeymoon stay here at Combermere Abbey? Take full advantage of the beautiful setting of your wedding, go on romantic walks around our grounds and spend some quality time de-compressing with your new partner before rushing for boarding passes and passports and jetting off…
